We get a lot of request for help with poor performance when capturing with Fraps, or trouble with the video files once they're made. We, the volunteers here, have always been going back and forth: "what's your operating system," "what kind of hard drive," etc, etc. This is getting a bit tiresome and error-prone, so I am going to ask people to run a script to gather the information for us automatically.

Once you run it (details below), a text file will open with a report. You can copy the report and paste it into a help request, or use the information however you like.

INSTALL

(Update Dec 2012) now open source

AVI Info

  • Drag the video from an Explorer window onto the program window.
  • The script will run for a few moments...
  • A report will appear.
  • Click the Copy button to copy the report to the clipboard.
  • Paste the report into your request for help. CODE tags are included in the report.
  • Please "X" out any sensitive information before publishing
(I don't see anything sensitive in the report, but it's best to be careful)
Hardware Check

  • Run the program - a hardware report will be created
  • Click a Copy button. There are now two Copy buttons:
    • "Copy System Report to clipboard"
    • "Copy System Report with Running Processes to clipboard"
(copy Running Processes only if this information is needed - to troubleshoot a software conflict etc.)
  • Paste the report into your forum post.
  • Please "X" out any sensitive information before publishing, especially if copying Running Processes.
(I don't see anything sensitive in the report, but it's best to be careful)
(EDIT these are both .NET 2.0 GUI applications, but Frafs Hardware Check started out as a batch file + script + open source tools, as evident from the discussion below)

Bump and request for sticky :)

Fixed some bugs in the archives, thanks to raffriff for finding those bugs! :)

Alright, why not! ^^

For reference, I simply downloaded the archive in the first download link (the ZIP one), extracted it in my downloads folder, dragged the raw Fraps video file on to fraps_support.bat and the script automatically opened up a text file with all the information in it. Here it is:

Yum, look at mah hawt computer specs!

Also, here's the actual video I tested it on, straight out of Fraps and on to YouTube! Well, technically that is not true. I ran it through VirtualDub first to cut a few seconds off of the original file, and just used 'direct stream copy'.

Thank you for testing it Rensje, and I'm glad to see it working as it is supposed to!
What about partition E: ? Is it an optical drive, an empty slot, or do I have a bug?
* search for 'ST3000DM 001-9YN166' * It's a Seagate? Maybe I do have a bug there.

Indeed, it is my Seagate Barracuda 3TB. It's the drive I use to record Fraps footage to.

I think I read somewhere that HDDs bigger than 2TB will cause problems in Windows sometimes, the OS not recognizing the full size of the drive. Perhaps this can cause problems for software as well, in some cases? I'm not sure, all I know is that it works as intended and that I had 2,69 of 2,72TB available at the time of recording.
Probably a numeric overflow error in my script - I should have tested with larger numbers. It will be fixed in the next update.
I'll give the updated version a try once it's out and report my findings again.

Oh, I've been quite busy with work lately. I'll give it a go shortly :D

Edit: It worked just fine, from what I can tell:

New file info tool - download here (sourceforge.net). Sample output:
Code:
FRAFS AVI Info
Name X2-Demo 2012-10-17 15-22-04-000.avi

Audio: Bitrate (kbps) 1,411 kbps
Audio: Comp. Ratio 1.00000 : 1
It gets basic file information on any AVI file, but is targeted to the needs of Fraps users. Note especially:
  • Video: Aspect
    • (tell if your aspect ratio is ideal for YouTube - 16:9)
  • Video: Dropped Frames
    • (tell if your system performance is falling behind)
  • Video: Comp. Ratio
    • (Qf of uncompressed video = exactly 24, so compression = 24 / Qf)
  • Video: Color Space
    • (tell if recording was made in RGB lossless mode or not)
  • Audio: Comp. Ratio
    • (for any video with uncompressed audio, compression ratio should be exactly 1:1; if not, this may indicate an audio sync problem)
  • ERRORS: (this file didn't have any errors, so no ERRORS section is shown)
    • (if anything is not right with the file header or index, it should be listed here; note this tool does not scan the entire video for errors - see here for that)
It's called 'FRAFS AVI Info' (FRAFS = Fraps+Raffriff - say it three times fast)

Written in VB.NET, using source code adapted from Virtualdub (if it works, it is thanks to Virtualdub; if it doesn't, the fault is mine). :D

Hey @raffriff is it possible you could make some tweaks to the FRAFS AVI info ? Notably:
* Indicate number of frames dropped in a separate line (eg, Frames, Keyframes, Dropped Frames)
* Remove the bit about format and codec if the codec detected is Fraps (it's pointless to mention this as there are no other codecs in Fraps :p)

Thanks!

Yes Windows Software Raid not the best solution as it becomes a RAM hog as you add more drives to these Arrays but are highly effective if configured correctly.

The Display config at the time of the report, only 2 screens were in use. I noticed * Video Monitor(s) was correct and * Video Screen(s) labeled the second monitor as DISPLAY3, technically this is also correct as I have 2 disconnected monitors, DISPLAY2 and DISPLAY4 shown below. This demonstrates windows device cataloging and the variable nature of their results.
